What does it mean to discover your Constitution, and why is it helpful?
A basic principle of natural medical systems, including herbalism, Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda, is that everything is influenced by the elements of nature — air, space, fire, earth, and water — and that health is related to the balance of these elements in each individual.
Discovering your Constitution means to find out which elements are predominant in your body and mind. If your natural state is more reflective of fire, for example, then you are more prone to certain types of conditions aggravated by heat.
Ayurvedic practitioners use a combination of data collection, examination/observation, experience, and knowledge to discover your constitution. This information is compared with your current state of health to understand which elements are out of balance. In the example above, acid indigestion would be an imbalance aggravated by heat. Treatment then focuses on restoring balance to the element or elements in your body.

According to Ayurveda, everything is represented and influenced by the elements of nature. The elements can also be used to describe qualities of the body and mind.
The air quality is responsible for movement throughout the body. For example, circulation of blood and lymph, excretion of waste materials like urine and feces, movement of air into and out of the lungs, childbirth, and any other forces of movement in the body are governed by the air principle.
The space principle is seen in the hollow spaces of the body, such as those found inside the colon or bones.
The fire quality is responsible for the metabolic aspects of the body, such as digestive acids, metabolic processes in cells, and even the processes involved in “digesting” images, or sight.
The earth principle is responsible for solid aspects of the body, such as the bones and muscles.
The water quality is responsible for the fluids in the body, including plasma, saliva, and lymph.
The principles of the elements are not only seen in the physical characteristics of body, but also in behavioral characteristics of the mind.
For example, air and space can be seen in individuals who have a lot of creativity and imagination.
Fire can be seen in individuals who are very focused, hardworking and accomplished.
Earth can be seen in individuals who are very stable and consistent.
The water element can be seen in qualities such as caring and nurturing.

We experience imbalances in our bodies and minds throughout our lifetime. These imbalances occur when we eat foods that are not harmonious to our bodies, or when we engage in activities that are not in our best interests. We also experience imbalances from change in seasons, lack of sleep, erratic schedules, too much travel, excessive worry, and more.
In Ayurveda, holistic treatment focuses on restoring balance by addressing diet and lifestyle, as well as using herbal formulations.
Treatment plans are individualized, which means that the practitioner and individual work together to find a solution that is acceptable and effective.

What can you expect when you work with a Practitioner to discover your Constitution and find balance in your life? The typical steps are outlined below.
Before your appointment, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire on your health history, lifestyle patterns, and current complaints.
During your appointment, the Practitioner will review your questionnaire responses with you, and may ask additional questions for clarification or understanding.
The Practitioner will also perform an examination, assessing your blood pressure, pulse, physical structure, and tongue.
Using all the information collected during your appointment, the Practitioner will develop a report of findings and make recommendations to restore balance and/or optimize your health. The report includes your constitution and your imbalance (if relevant). The main focus will be on the complaints you identify as being most important to you.
The report of findings, with a recommended treatment plan, will be presented to you in a follow-up visit.
Individuals get the most benefit when they schedule regular follow-ups so the Practitioner can monitor progress and make course corrections when necessary.
