The Medicinal Magic of CCF Tea

CCF Tea is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy used to address digestive issues, promote good digestion, and encourage gentle detoxification of the body. Although its traditional use is for digestion and detoxification, the drink is also used for weight loss, stimulation of the lymph system, and assistance in the absorption of nutrients.

CCF stands for “Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel,” because these are the seed spices used in the tea. While the combination of these seeds provides a cupful of health benefits, each spice contributes its own unique medicinal and taste properties. Let’s look at some of these properties below.

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is a popular spice added to curries, stews, and soups as a key ingredient in Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican and Mediterranean dishes. But it has been used in traditional medicine for other purposes as well. In Ayurveda, its warming properties are thought to enhance the appetite and burn toxins in the digestive system. It has also been used as a diuretic, carminative (relieving gas), anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic. While research on medicinal plants is not robust, initial research has suggested that Cumin may have anticancer, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant effects.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) -- also known as cilantro when the leaves are used --contributes to the supportive actions of CCF tea by helping to alleviate gas, bloating and indigestion through the secretion of digestive enzymes. Traditional medicine has used coriander for reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Coriander, like Cumin, has multiple other health benefits. For example, research suggests that the seeds and extracts can help lower blood sugar by improving insulin activity and may reduce LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and increase HDL (“good cholesterol”). Other potential actions of Coriander include detoxification (including heavy metals), liver support, antimicrobial actions, reduction of anxiety, regulation of menstrual cycles and reduction of menstrual pain, promotion of clearer skin, and strengthening of the immune system.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) rounds out CCF tea’s digestion-supporting properties with its ability to alleviate bloating, gas and indigestion by relaxing muscles in the gastrointestinal system and stimulating production of bile. The muscle-relaxing properties make it a good remedy for reducing colic and stomach cramps in children. Fennel seeds contain compounds that mimic estrogen and are often used to relieve menstrual cramps and support hormonal balance during menopause. Fennel seeds have a cooling property, so they soothe acid reflux and burning sensations in the digestive system. Research has also suggested that Fennel supports healthy weight management as an appetite suppressant and natural diuretic.

In addition to having powerful health benefits, most people find that CCF Tea tastes delightful! The combination of these seeds yields a light, earthy and slightly sweet tea with a mild spiciness. So, in addition to drinking CCF between meals to support digestion, after a heavy meal to ease bloating, or during a cleanse or fast to assist with detoxification, the tea can be enjoyed at any time of day, as often as desired.

To make CCF tea:

  • Combine equal amounts of Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel Seeds, and store in a jar. Using 1 teaspoon of each seed will yield 3-4 servings.

  • For each serving, bring 1 cup of water to a gentle boil, add 1 teaspoon of CCF blend, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes. This allows the seeds to release their flavor and medicinal properties.

  • Strain and enjoy.

    • You may want to add a slice of fresh ginger for additional digestive support,

    • or a little fresh lemon juice for added detoxification,

    • or a little honey for sweetness (after the tea has cooled).

    • You might also consider making a larger pot of CCF tea to store in a thermos or water bottle and drinking it throughout the day.

The Apothecary carries CCF Blend, as well as cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds individually. With each purchase of at least $10 through the end of January, take home a 1-ounce sample of CCF tea (approximately 12 servings).
